Wood Panel Accent Door

I recently constructed a wood accent wall in my guest room and the whole process left me wanting more. I started sketches to remodel my entry way and was annoyed at the ugly coat closet door right in the middle of my space. After searching online a little, I realized that I could replicate the same process of wood panel accents to my door! It’s so quick and cheap! I just used wood that I had left over from a past project, but you could get this for around $20.00 (?) at your local lumber store. I bought the paint for $14.00 at Lowe’s and used nails, spackle and painters tape that I had in the garage.
First step, let the kids have a little fun. They loved that I was letting them paint on the door! Maybe not the best idea for them to think I would be okay with this any other time, but I’ve been stuck indoors with these high energy kids for a month now, so anything goes.
I decided to go with a vertical design to match the idea that I had for a new wall art painting next to the door. I cut the pieces to the same size, which was 3/4 of the length of the door, and I then placed them about 1” apart coming from opposite sides of the door. This design gave the door a little more depth in the center area where the door handle would go. Okay, okay, I didn’t actually do this part, my husband did. But you can see how easy it was in this video.
After all of the wood pieces were nailed to the door, I used a lightweight spackle to fill the gaps between the nail heads and the wood surface in preparation for my favorite part…painting!
Make sure to tape up the edges good, especially when using a dark color like I did. I wanted the entry way area to match our new Bold Bohemian collection (sneak peaks below!), so I selected black. I used Valspar Ultra paint + primer in Carbonized color. I used 2 coats of paint.
I love the final product! It turned an otherwise eyesore of a door into a piece of art! What do you think? It looks amazing in photos with our Bold Bohemian rug, throw pillow and wall hanging that will be launching soon on Rebel Villa!
